Best New Video

Looking for an adorable video that covers topics such as: goal setting, perseverance, courage, problem solving, and determination??

Check out this adorable video. I showed it to my 5th grade to introduce our lesson on goal setting and they loved it. I can't wait to show it as part of my perseverance pig lesson.

Want to use it for goal setting? After the video had the students complete a "My Goals" sheet.
They divided their construction paper into 4 squares:
1) 5th grade goals
2)5 year goals
3)10 year goals
4) life goals

I had old magazines they cut out to represent their goals. They loved it.

I struggle with....

spelling, grammar, organization, ADHD, being a crazy dog mom, but I won't let that stop me from being awesome.

Here's a lesson I just stole from the remarkable Elizabeth Shepherd. It's a ton of fun for 5th and 6th graders. Some of you may feel comfortable doing it with 4th as well.

Do your kids love Jarrett Krosoczka as much as us? He's written so many amazing books, including the lunch lady series. He's an amazing author, school supporter, and all around an amazing and inspiring man.

Here's our simple yet powerful lesson:

1) We watched his Ted Talks about becoming an author. It's really funny and engaging. Heads up he does talk about his mothers addiction to drugs, his absent father, and his grandparents love of cocktails. Oh and he says "hell" once. My older kids could handle it, in fact many of them I think really connected because their own homes are just as chaotic.

2) We discussed how each of us face challenges but to be successful we need to be resilient. We talked about perseverance, resiliency and hope. Then I asked them to take a personal self reflection moment. During this time they completed the sentence: "I struggle with_______, but I won't let that stop me from_________." It was awesome to see some of their answers.

"I struggle with my parents divorce, but I won't let that stop me from getting off task or being irresponsible."

What do you struggle with? What will you not let that stop you from doing?

Techy and I Know It Prt. 2

I may or may not have an iPad in my possession. Ok I do and I downloaded 15 free apps today alone. Here are some of my favorites:

Dusty D. Dawg Has Feelings Too

This is an adorable story of a cute puppy and his many feelings. I love that many of the situations in the story are not "dog specific." For example he has friends that moves away or get's scolded. For parents you are even able to customize the story with the child's name.
I want to go into my K classes tomorrow just so I can show them this one. This has also reignited my desire to write a children's book about dogs. This one is especially meaningful for me this week since my foster Seven moved to a new foster home. Brooklyn has been pouting and moaning and won't leave the window. I think sometimes we forget that animals an grieve too.

Show Off Your Goals

One of my new favorite things about the New Year so far is all of my friends that are starting blogs or making a resolution to write more ;)

For example, if you love dogs you have to follow/add to your Google Reader: http://nashvillepittie.blogspot.com/

One of my dear work friends, who is a true inspiration for health and fitness, has a wonderful blog:

Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. Run. Not too hard. Pray A lot.

Personalized Goal Cards

As you saw in my previous blog entry I love Vistaprint and I love my new brand.  One idea I already made and ordered are my new "passes."

I can use these with my "frequent visitors" and so they can see how many visits per month or each semester they get and I will  punch/initial them when they are used.

Today as I was searching for something I think I pinned?! I stumbled across an idea I pinned a while ago- goal cards. I had an "Ah Ha!" moment and was like yep one more thing I can make with the Vistaprint loyalty cards.

Students can write down a personalized goal and each time they take a step in reaching that goal or each day of the week they achieve that goal they get a punch. For example, I will get an "A" on the next test and they get a punch each time they study or for each "A" they get on a quiz. It could also be a behavior goal, like "I won't interrupt my teacher," and they get a punch each day of the week they can achieve this goal. At the end of the school week they would get a prize from their teacher, me, parent, or all of the above.

So I made a few samples! What do you think? Which is your favorite?

Vote now, which one do you like? Or tell me which parts of each you like and I can create another one  ;)
